Swiss Chard (Five Color Silverbeet)

Swiss Chard
  • Beta vulgaris 

  • Growing Instructions 

    • Sow seeds in the early Spring, Swiss Chard can handle light frost 

    • Seeds can be started indoors about 5-6 weeks prior to planting  

    • Seeds should be planted 4” apart with rows spaced 20-24" apart and a dept of ½"  

    • Ready to harvest in approximately 50-60 days  

  • Tips & Tricks 

    • Not able to plant a garden outside? Try growing Swiss Chard in a container as small as a gallon!  

  • Seed Saving 

    • Please note that it takes two years for chard to complete its growth cycle, seed saving should take place at the end of the second year 

    • Allow the chard stalks to grow until completely dry  

    • Use your hand to gently rub seeds out of the stalks to collect  

    • Chard seeds are in berry-like clusters, do not break the clusters apart to protect seed viability  

    • Allow seeds to dry fully, in a cool, dark area 

    • Seeds should be stored in a cool, dry place and are viable for up to five years
