Winter Holiday Symbols

The holidays are a time of joy, connection, and celebration. Whether you observe Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Hanukkah, the sounds, smells, and symbols of the season are all around. These symbols have a rich cultural history that many of us do not know.

For instances, did you know that the Christmas tree goes back to ancient Egyptians and Romans? Or that the center candle on the Menorah is called the "helper" candle?  How about the candles on the Kinara for Kwanzaa, did you know they are called mishumaa saba?

If you want to learn more fun facts about these holidays or other Winter holidays like Las Posadas or Soyal then head to the library and check out our holiday books in the Children's Room today!  You can also explore some of the digital resources we offer on our Learning Resources and Download and Stream pages like National Geographic Kids, Tumblebooks, or Libby.
